Milwaukee Ring camera murder, young father murdered

A Ring camera captured the sound of gunfire near 6th and Rogers on Monday evening, June 21. The coroner identified the murdered man as Mathayus Burton, 18.

Family said Burton was a hard worker who would do anything to provide for his family. He leaves behind three children and one on the way.

His family wants to know why this happened and who did it.

The doorbell camera was in the front row when gunshots rang out on the south side of Milwaukee Monday.

“You can’t even have your kids outside,” said a neighbor.

The incident marks another tragedy in the neighborhood.

“That makes no sense, putting down a young father,” said a neighbor.

According to police, Burton was shot several times and died at the scene.

“It’s just crazy going through this now, getting this call,” Burton’s aunt said. “Like, this is really painful.”

Burton’s aunt didn’t want to show her face on camera because she fears for her safety, but she said she wants people to know about her cousin.

“Mathayus was actually here to make the youth and the community a lot better,” said Burton’s aunt.

She said he was a father of three and had a baby on the way. His aunt said family came first.

“Mathayus worked all the time,” Burton’s aunt said. “He wasn’t the type of guy to be on the street.”

“I heard all kinds of shots coming from where I’m staying, everyone, so it’s scary,” said a neighbor.

A neighbor said that after hearing gunshots for many nights, she was also too afraid to go in front of the camera for her own safety.

“I don’t want to get caught in the crossfire,” said a neighbor. “I’m constantly hitting the floor.”

She said her only option is to move.

“I have two boys and a grandchild in the house, and it’s not safe, so I’m moving,” she said.

‘It’s the youth. It has to change,’ said Burton’s aunt. “Something has to stop. Something has to give in. We have to make some kind of program, something for these kids.”

Burton’s aunt said it’s a change that’s needed because she’s holding onto her cousin’s kids tightly.

Milwaukee Police say the shooting started because of an argument. No arrests have been made.
