Verdict reached in the process of football WAG between Coleen Rooney, Rebekah Vardy

Coleen Rooney, wife of British football star Wayne Rooney, has won the high-profile libel case brought against her by colleague WAG Rebekah Vardy, ending the dramatic trial dubbed “Wagatha Christie” by British media.

After three years of lengthy legal back and forth, judge Karen Steyn made her verdict on Friday morning.

In her statement released onlineSteyn determined that it was “probable” that Vardy’s agent at the time, Caroline Watt, “taken the direct act” of leaking stories from Coleen’s private Instagram account to British tabloid The Sun.

The explosive feud started in 2019 when Rooney sensationally accused Vardythe wife of Leicester City player Jamie Vardy, of leaking stories to the newspaper.

Rebekah, who? vehemently denied the allegationsresponded by hitting Coleen with a lawsuit for libel.

The evidence shows “clearly, in my opinion, that Ms. Vardy was aware of and condoned this behavior, and actively participated in it by referring Ms Watt to the private Instagram account, sharing her screenshots of Ms. Rooney’s posts.” directing and drawing attention to items that may be of interest to the press, and answering additional questions from the press through Ms. Watt,” Steyn wrote.

The legal battle has been dubbed the “Wagatha Christie” case, a reference to the famous author of detective novels, in honor of Coleen’s amateur detective work.

“It’s… Rebekah Vardy’s account.”

In October 2019, Coleen shared a long post about her Twitter and Instagram accounts, suggesting that “for a few years now, someone I trusted to follow me on my personal Instagram account has been consistently updating SUN newspaper about my private messages and stories.”

The television personality said “after a long time trying to figure out who it could be, for various reasons,” she had a gut feeling and formulated a plan to evict this mysterious person.

“I’ve blocked everyone from viewing my Instagram stories except ONE account,” Rooney said at the time. “Over the past five months, I’ve posted a series of false stories to see if they made it into the Sun newspaper. And you know what, they did it!”

Rooney noted that she “saved all of the original stories and took screenshots that clearly show only one person viewed them,” claiming it was “Rebekah Vardy’s account.”

Rebekah responded to the accusations on Twitter the same day, tagging Coleen in her post.

“Like I just told you on the phone, I wish you had called me if you were thinking this,” she tweeted in October 2019.

“I never speak to anyone about you, as several journalists who have asked me over the years can vouch for. If you thought this was happening, you could have told me and I could have changed my passwords to see if it stopped.”

Rebekah went on to say that “several people have accessed” her Instagram account over the years, adding, “This week I discovered I was following people I didn’t know and never followed myself.”

“I’m not funny, but I don’t need the money, what’s the use of selling stories about you?” she wrote. “I really liked you Coleen and I’m so upset you chose to do this, especially when I’m heavily pregnant.”

The judge said Rooney had successfully proved her allegation was "essentially true."

Rebekah later filed a libel suit against Coleen in June 2020, setting the stage for a legal battle estimated to total more than $3.7 million in legal fees.

The case first appeared in court in November 2020after a judge said Coleen’s post “clearly identified” Rebekah as “guilty of the serious and consequent breach of trust”.
