Elon Musk’s father, Errol, said on an Australian radio show that he was not proud of his billionaire son.
He said the family had done “a lot of things”, although he added that Elon had “really exceeded the target”.
Errol Musk said Elon’s younger brother, Kimbal, was his “pride and joy”.
Elon Musk’s father said during an Australian radio show interview Monday that he was not proud of his billionaire son because his family had done “many things”.
When asked if he was proud of Elon, the 76-year-old said, “No, well, you know, I mean, we’re a family that’s been doing a lot of stuff for a long time. It’s not like we suddenly started doing something.”
“They’ve seen a lot of things and we’ve done a lot of things together,” he said, adding, “but in fact Elon really exceeded the target.”
Despite this success, the elder Musk said the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX was “not as happy as he would like” because he “feels like he is behind schedule” with his companies.
“Where he is now, he would have loved to be there five years ago,” said Errol Musk.
He said his son wanted to launch SpaceX’s massive spacecraft Starship long ago.
“He’s frustrated with the progress,” Musk said.
Later in the interview, Musk said Kimbal, Elon Musk’s younger brother, was his “pride and joy.”
Musk said Kimbal Musk was also a billionaire, though not nearly as wealthy as Elon, whose money is worth Bloomberg billionaire index estimated at $260 billion.
It is unclear whether Kimbal Musk is a billionaire; a 2021 Forbes article estimated his net worth at about $700 million.
Errol Musk also told the radio show that Kimbal Musk was lucky in his marriage to Cristiana Wyly because they spent a lot of time together.
He added that he was concerned that Elon Musk would not be able to find a partner who would give up a career for him.
“He has to find a woman to give up what she does, and that’s not easy,” Musk said in the interview.
Elon Musk has been married three times: once to Justine Wilson, his first wife, and twice to Talulah Riley. He has also been romantically involved with a string of celebrities, including Amber Heard and the musician Grimes.
